straight 8 - the global super 8 filmmaking community based in london - is looking for a Community Manager

This position will only suit someone with a keen interest in the art of filmmaking (both analog and digital, or at least know the difference!), short films, advertising, music video, feature films.

We are offering 25 hours a week for 6 months at minimum wage. 

Background:

STRAIGHT 8 is a global filmmaking competition which we started in 1999. People make a short film on one cartridge super 8, editing only in camera, and see the result for the first time ever, at its premiere. It’s popular both with upcoming and established filmmakers and advertising agencies and production companies, globally. www.straight8.net

Your position would be assisting our small, focussed and motivated team, continue to manage, and nurture our ever-growing community

The job is home working, with the opportunity potentially to meet up at co-working spaces, or our base in Camden, London NW1 if beneficial and as conditions allow. Ability to travel to London is not essential for the right candidate. 

We’re a small friendly team working collaboratively to get results. The right person with good people skills will feel comfortable, welcome, challenged and fulfilled!

The position will involve the following:

Assisting Alex and Ed in the overall running of straight 8, including:

Addressing any questions from entrants and prospective entrants, and helping us keep them in the loop.

Managing the back end portal for entrants, along with our Google Drive and media storage.

Helping ensure our website is clear, up-to-date and accessible at all times.

Researching and engaging Film Schools and universities with film courses worldwide. 

Outreach to all manner of exciting film individuals and organisations.

Helping us keep our large global community feeling connected to one another, while it continues to grow, with integrity.

Be close to the hub of everything straight 8 where opinions and ideas are freely traded.

Helping us maintain our database of press, contacts and subscribers, including using our Mailchimp, to best effect for both us and our audience.

Essential skills:

  • A genuine interest in films, and ideally analogue photography or filmmaking

  • Fluent written English.

  • Computer confident with access to a computer and internet during work hours.

  • Good technical ability, and the confidence to ask for help if you need it!

  • Well organised and a good communicator.

  • Ideally you’ll have experience using the Adobe suite, including Adobe Premiere and Photoshop

  • Decent ability to flexibly learn to use new software / web applications including Mailchimp and Google Suite.

  • Knowing your Spike Lee from your Spike Jonze, your Michael Bay from your Michael Caine.

  • A sense of humour. 

You will need to know how to use:

  • Google Drive and Google Docs/Sheets etc.

  • A super 8 camera!! Don’t worry we will teach you from scratch and can lend one if needed

  • A computer….

Learn and adopt our tone of voice and social media style across our current social media platforms.

Managing our extensive archive of exciting assets, photos and videos, and using them to create new content for social media.

Assisting in creating, scheduling and publishing content for our social media platforms; Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin.

Assist us as we start to use platforms we’re not yet on (e.g. TikTok).

Learn about new best practises for social media marketing, as algorithms change etc. 

Researching and contacting Film Schools and universities with film courses worldwide. 

Help us keep our large global community feeling connected to one another, while it continues to grow, with integrity.

Help us use our Mailchimp to ensure that our email lists are combined and clearly organised.

Essential skills:

  • Fluent written English.

  • Design abilities and a keen eye for aesthetics.

  • Computer literate with access to a computer and internet during work hours.

  • Well organised and a good communicator.

  • Confident using different social media platforms.

  • Editing and content creation.


You will need to know (or learn from us) how to use:

  • Canva

  • Social media scheduling software

  • DaVinci Resolve

  • Google Drive and Google Docs/Sheets etc.
