UNDER R-EIGHT-ED
every year people ask us for camera reccomendations outside the usual suspects. so we're putting together a very-not-exhaustive list of some cameras that are still worth your attention and might be (a bit more) of a bargain
it'll be an ever growing work-in-progress.
please - help us add to it. send us your favourite hidden gems, or that camera you have that you thought would be awful but was actually-surprisingly-good. email us or DM us on insta, send pics. we'll share them and add them to our page.
remember, this is just a jumping off point! so if you buy one of these cameras and you hate it then don’t blame us!!
ELMO SUPER 110
a lovely camera! it has a 7-70mm lens and is a really well built camera. the handle comes off the body for tripod mounting. it’s not small though…
NIKON R8 / R10
it feels pretty weird to call this under-rated as it’s probably one of the best available, and a few years ago was a very popular choice. loads of features with great image stability, variable shutter, 54fps slo-mo and a great lens. what’s the catch? it’s a big heavy boy!!
AGFA MOVEXOOM 6 / 8 / 10
another relatively big, heavy super 8 camera, and probably agfa’s best. the movexoom 10 model goes down to 6mm at its widest setting (wider than a canon 1014 xls). the movexooms also have a load of features - fades, dissolves, interval timer…
BAUER A512
ok, this one’s pretty popular so maybe we’re stretching ‘underrated’ here… but the a512, made by robert bosch (yes that bosch) is an excellent super 8 camera. it has a variable shutter, great slo-mo, and a 12x angenieux zoom lens! it also came with a matte box so you can look the part too
ROLLEI SL84
(recommended by will from cine reportage)
also made by bauer for rollei, the SL range are generally considered to be very good cameras. they have schneider lenses, and the sl84 can do tricks like lap dissolves…
ZEISS IKON M808
(recommended by will from cine reportage)
this one’s not too big and heavy!! it has a 7-56mm f/1.8 schneider lens and can shoot 54fps slowmo. it’s almost like these ‘zeiss’ guys should get into the camera world?
